As a computer science student—still dreaming of a career as a chess grandmaster—Cees Duivenvoorde began writing business software in his spare time in 1988 for entrepreneurs in the region. Assignments soon poured in, prompting Cees to call on fellow students and take a more businesslike approach. Not long after, Duivenvoorde Software Engineering BV (DSE) became a reality, and its service portfolio was expanded to include the delivery and maintenance of IT business networks. Thirty-seven years later, the DSE Group has around 70 employees across five companies and offices in Beverwijk and Utrecht. DSE is active in Artificial Intelligence, Voice Technology, IT Managed Services, IT Asset Management, Identity Governance and Automation, and IT Security, serving customers throughout the Netherlands, including NS, Wolters Kluwer, ASR, Engie, Stella, the National Police, UMC Groningen, SVB, Nationale Nederlanden, DUO, Medical Center Leeuwarden, Mendix, Bravis Hospital, Mediahuis, Schuberg Philis, Rijkswaterstaat, Maasstad Hospital, and TUI. Chess still plays an important role within DSE; for example, DSE organized the Dutch Corporate Chess Championship in 2016 and 2021 and became the Dutch Corporate Chess Champion in 2017.
